A King, Queen or Chieftain may be the head of a clan but may not be its absolute ruler. Below the Royalty or Chieftain are several lesser Nobles and Chieftains, and below them, Freemen. Any individual of Freeman status or higher may own land. Below the status of Freemen are peasants and servants and before the Dzaa conquest, the status below this was that of slave*.
The governing body of a clan differs from one culture to the next. There are some clans that are ruled absolutely by their chieftain, king, or queen, whereas others are guided by the oldest and wisest members, others by a council, etc.
The female members of a clan maintain equal rights and are viewed in exactly the same manner as the male members. Female and male can hold any rank and frequently fight alongside each other in times of war.
(*The Dzaa have outlawed slavery. Consequently, when they conquered Edadh, all slaves were freed. Many returned to their respective homelands, but others remained where they were and have become more valuable members of their Clan. Many Clans have applied their liberal viewpoint on women to ex-slaves and it is not uncommon for the descendents of slaves to now hold positions of power and respect in a Clan. Thus many Clans are comprised of families of all the civilised races. However, the opposite may also be true. Many clans are xenophobic and will be openly hostile to other races, other cultures and even members of other Clans of their own culture!)
